Calling all those who drive though Bristol on a regular basis. It is only a few days until Bristol’s Clean Air Zone initiative kicks off.
What? You know nothing about it?
On Monday November 28th Bristol launches its Clean Air Zone Initiative and all drivers who regularly drive through the city need to know the rules. To avoid a hefty fine and a lot of frustration it is time you understood what this means for you, your vehicle, and your business.
What is a Clean Air Zone?
Air quality matters to all of us, and a clean air zone is designed to improve the air everyone breathes. Other cities such as Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, and Portsmouth have already implemented Clean Air Zones. Other cities throughout the UK such as Sheffield, Tyneside and, of course, Bristol are implementing such strategies over the course of the next few months.
Clean Air Zones
A Clean Air Zone is defined by one of five categories from class A to D. Class A is the lowest category that affects public transport vehicles, coaches, taxis, and private hire vehicles. Moving up the classes to Class D more vehicles and vehicle types are included to include HGVs, vans, minibuses, cars, and motorbikes.

What Does Bristol’s Clean Air Zone Mean for Me?
The Clean Air Zone in Bristol comes into effect on Monday 28th November 2022. If your vehicle is not clean or efficient enough, you could face significant charges and costs. At present, the daily charge for cars, taxis and light good vehicles under 3.5 tonnes is £9 per day rising to £100 for larger vehicles.
You cannot avoid the charges as they are in force 24/7. However, charges do not apply for certain vehicles, including:
- Euro 4, 5 and 6 petrol vehicles, from 2006 upwards
- Euro 6 diesel vehicles, from end of 2015 onwards
- fully electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
- modified or retrofitted vehicles registered with the Energy Saving Trust’s Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS)
- Motorbikes
Do I need to Pay?
There is a simple government website that helps you identify if you need to pay or not. Furthermore, you can ascertain whether the area you live in. Work in or drive through is part of the clean air zone using this map
